AC Repair Cost in North Carolina: Honest Pricing Guide
Real numbers, common parts, and how to think about repair vs. replace. Written from 40 years of service calls across the I-85 corridor.
The Service Call Fee
Most reputable HVAC companies in North Carolina charge a diagnostic or service call fee between $89 and $150. That covers the trip out, the time it takes a technician to test your system, and a written diagnosis with pricing before any repair work starts.
Watch out for two extremes. Free service calls usually get made up somewhere else, often in inflated repair prices. Service calls over $200 are out of line for residential work in the Piedmont. Our diagnostic fee at Davidson Heating and Air is $110 flat. That fee covers the diagnosis itself and is separate from any repair cost. We do not bake it into the repair total or apply it as a credit, the diagnostic is the diagnostic and the repair is the repair.
Common AC Repair Costs by Part
These ranges reflect what we actually charge in 2025 across Lexington, Thomasville, Greensboro, Salisbury, and the rest of our service area. Prices include parts, labor, and our workmanship guarantee. The $110 diagnostic fee is separate.
Capacitor replacement: $200 to $450. The single most common AC failure. A capacitor stores the jolt that starts your compressor and outdoor fan. They fail every 8 to 12 years in NC heat, often without warning.
Contactor replacement: $225 to $475. The relay that tells your outdoor unit to turn on. Insects and corrosion are the usual killers in this climate.
Refrigerant leak search and recharge: $450 to $1,500. Cost depends on whether the leak is accessible, how much refrigerant escaped, and which type your system uses. R-410A systems are cheaper to recharge than older R-22 systems.
Blower motor replacement: $550 to $1,400. Variable-speed ECM motors cost more than older PSC motors. Brand and model affect availability.
Evaporator coil replacement: $1,500 to $3,200. Coils corrode from formicary corrosion in NC's humidity. Match the coil to the outdoor unit or system efficiency drops.
Compressor replacement: $2,000 to $4,200. The most expensive common repair. If your system is over 12 years old and needs a new compressor, replacement is almost always the smarter financial decision.
What Changes the Price
System age and brand. Parts for current Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, and Rheem systems are widely stocked. Parts for systems older than 15 years often have to be ordered, which adds time and sometimes cost.
Refrigerant type. R-22 was phased out of production in 2020. Remaining stock is expensive, often $125 to $225 per pound versus $50 to $95 for R-410A. A leaking R-22 system is usually a replacement conversation.
Access and time of day. After-hours calls (evenings, weekends, holidays) typically add a premium. We try to handle most repairs during normal hours so you do not pay extra.
Warranty status. If you are still under manufacturer parts warranty, you only pay labor. Bring up your install date and serial number when you call. We will check coverage before quoting.
When Repair Stops Making Sense
The honest framework we use with every customer: multiply the system age by the repair cost. If that number is greater than 5,000, replacement is usually the better long-term decision.
Example: a 14-year-old system needing a $1,200 repair. 14 times 1,200 equals 16,800. Way past the threshold. That repair money is better applied to a new system that will run another 15 years at higher efficiency.
Other replacement triggers: a failed compressor on a system over 10 years old, repeated refrigerant leaks, or three or more service calls in two seasons. We will tell you when replacement is the right call. We will also tell you when it is not.
Financing and Avoiding Surprise Bills
We offer financing through Wells Fargo on repairs over $1,000 and on full system replacements. Approval takes a few minutes and we can run it from the truck.
The single best way to avoid surprise repair bills, and to get to the front of the line during a heat wave, is a maintenance plan. Our $240 per year service agreement includes two tune-ups, priority scheduling over non-members, and 10 percent off all repairs. Most homeowners save the cost of the plan with one repair discount, and members are the first calls we get to when the schedule is full.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much is a typical AC repair in North Carolina?
Most residential AC repairs in NC fall between $250 and $750 once parts and labor are added up, plus the $110 diagnostic fee. Capacitors and contactors are at the lower end. Refrigerant work and motor replacement are at the higher end.
Do you charge a service call fee?
Yes. Our diagnostic fee is $110 flat. It covers the trip and a complete system test, and it is separate from any repair cost. We do not apply it as a credit toward the repair, the diagnostic and the repair are billed as two distinct line items so pricing stays transparent.
Why is AC repair more expensive in summer?
Our pricing stays the same year-round. What changes is wait time. After-hours and weekend calls during heat waves may carry a premium, which is why we recommend booking maintenance in spring before the rush, and why service agreement members get priority scheduling when things get tight.
Is it worth repairing a 15-year-old AC?
It depends on the repair cost. A $250 capacitor on a 15-year-old system is fine. A $1,800 compressor on the same system is not. As a rule, if age times repair cost is over 5,000, replacement saves money over the next few years.
Will my home warranty cover AC repair?
Sometimes. Most home warranties have caps, exclusions for refrigerant, and contractor restrictions. We are happy to work with your warranty company, but call them first to confirm coverage and authorization before scheduling.
Can I get a price over the phone?
We can give you a range based on what you describe, but accurate pricing requires a technician to test the system. AC symptoms can have multiple causes, and we would rather diagnose right than quote wrong.
